When bare metal beats a VPS

A practical guide to choosing a dedicated physical server instead of a VPS, including what ticket-only bare metal from Blossom includes.

A VPS is the right answer for most workloads. It is quick to deploy, easy to size in small steps, and gives a customer a complete server without making them pay for an entire physical machine. Bare metal becomes the better answer when the virtualization layer, shared host, or fixed VPS resource shape is the thing holding the workload back.

The important distinction is literal. A VPS is a virtual machine allocated from a physical host. Bare metal is the physical server itself: the operating system runs on the customer’s own machine, with no hypervisor between the OS and the hardware and no other virtual customers sharing that machine.

Blossom offers bare metal by ticket rather than a self-serve configuration list. It starts at $100 per month, with a one-time $50 setup charge for a customer's first dedicated machine only. The setup fee does not repeat on renewals or on later dedicated machines. Because machines are hand-built to the requested use case, a ticket is the right way to confirm the current build, location, and lead time before committing.

What bare metal changes

With a VPS, the customer gets defined virtual CPU, memory, disk, and network resources inside a host that runs other virtual machines. That is efficient and usually exactly what a web service, development environment, personal remote desktop, or small application needs.

With bare metal, the customer receives the whole server. The CPU cycles, memory, storage paths, and physical networking belong to that one machine. There is no neighboring VM on the same host and no hypervisor scheduling the customer's operating system alongside other guests.

That does not make bare metal magically faster for every task. A lightly used application may run identically on a properly sized VPS. The difference becomes meaningful when the workload consistently wants more of the physical system, needs unusual control, or is sensitive to the small but real boundaries introduced by virtualization.

Workloads that often justify a physical machine

Bare metal is worth considering for work that needs sustained, predictable access to resources rather than occasional bursts. Examples include heavy compilation, rendering, AI inference, busy game servers, and latency-sensitive systems. These workloads may benefit from keeping all CPU cores and memory on one machine, avoiding host-level contention, or having full control over the operating system and software stack.

It can also make sense when a customer needs a customized environment that does not map neatly to a standard VPS tier. A custom requirement is not automatically a bare-metal requirement, but it is a reason to open a ticket and describe the job instead of trying to force it into an unsuitable virtual plan.

For a simple service that is comfortably inside a VPS plan, physical hardware is usually unnecessary. Paying for an entire server does not improve an application that uses a small, stable amount of CPU and memory. In that case, the VPS remains the more economical tool and gives the customer an easier path to resize as the workload grows.

The questions to answer before choosing

Start with resource behavior, not the label. Is the workload CPU-bound for long periods, or does it only spike occasionally? Does it need a large amount of memory at once? Is disk performance central to the application, or is the dataset small and cacheable? Does the software need operating-system or hardware control that is unavailable or inconvenient inside a virtual machine?

Then consider operational needs. A VPS is a natural fit when rapid deployment, small starting size, and straightforward scaling matter most. A dedicated server is more appropriate when the machine should be treated as stable infrastructure for a substantial workload and the customer would rather own the entire resource envelope than share a host.

Finally, distinguish hardware control from IP classification. A bare-metal server gives a customer physical-machine exclusivity. It does not automatically turn a datacenter address into an ISP address or guarantee a particular result on a third-party website. If network identity is a requirement, say that in the ticket alongside the compute requirement so the correct product route can be discussed.

What ticket-only means

Ticket-only does not mean vague pricing or an indefinite wait. It means there is no fictional inventory selector with configurations that may not be available at the moment a customer clicks. The customer describes the workload, operating-system preference, location needs, storage expectations, and any other material requirement. Blossom can then confirm what is actually available and quote the appropriate machine.

That process matters because bare metal is not interchangeable in the way virtual resource slices are. A physical server has a specific hardware profile and an installation path. Quoting it by ticket avoids promising a configuration, a location, or a deployment time before it is confirmed.

A practical rule of thumb

Choose a VPS when you need a complete server quickly, your workload fits a listed resource tier, and sharing a physical host does not materially affect the job. The VPS plans page is the best place to compare the current virtual options.

Choose bare metal when the application genuinely benefits from the whole machine: sustained heavy compute, unusually demanding resource use, custom requirements, or a need to eliminate the hypervisor and other tenants from the equation. Open a ticket with the workload and target location rather than guessing at a configuration.

The goal is not to buy the most imposing product. It is to buy the server architecture that matches the work. For most users that is a VPS. For the jobs that require real hardware underneath, bare metal is the cleaner answer.
